As the curricula in dental schools becomes more and more filled with the everchanging aspects of clinical dentistry and the business of dentistry, less attention is given to basic principle of COMPLETE DENTURE THERAPY. However, understanding the fundamentals of complete denture therapy is essential for developing the necessary skills for complex comprehensive dental principles.

Therefore, Dr. Doug Benting (prosthodontist) and I (orofacial pain specialist and general dentist) have published a book dedicated to concise review of complete denture therapy from "Hello" to long-term maintenance that is now available for pre-order. The book was written upon request by Quintessence Publications and inspired by the expressed interest in this topic from many within "Speartopia." We are honored to have contributing all-stars like Dr. Gary DeWood (no summary needed because he's famous!) and Dr. Margaret Frankel (an up-and-coming expert in the field of oral airway considerations and a mentor in the Airway Prosthodontic Workshop) to build upon the the foundations of this text inspired by Dr. Rick Jude, an excellent prosthodontist and one of my very first mentors of my professional career. A review and critique of the contents was performed by a renowned prosthodontist from Athens, Greece, to whom I attribute my love for comprehensive dentistry; he also wrote the Forward to the text.

In this book, laid out much like a cookbook that can be implemented easily in practice after a brief perusal, we review modern elements of the denture examination from the perspective of an orofacial pain specialist. After all, dentures function essentially like orthotic appliances, and denture patients DO often suffer from orofacial pain! We explore the process of ethical decision making through the terminal dentition phase of life, and we also discuss the psychological aspects of patients facing the loss of a significant organ system--their teeth! Of course, we review fundamental techniques like impression methods, boxing/pouring and master cast creation, jaw records based on the concept of a stable and reproducible treatment position of the condyles, facially generated smile design, and a review of evidence-based occlusal design concepts. We also introduce the concept of the digital workflow in the complete denture process and discuss the pros and cons of this modern concept.
