Good morning everyone. I hope all of you out in the Spear Community have a wonderful and Happy Thanksgiving. I looked back and noticed we never really discussed mounting resin models and all that goes with it. Using plaster onto die stone is simple and easy, isn't it? I made the jump to printing diagnostic models in December 2020 and never looked back…but I did not know what I was in for when it came to mounting resin to plaster. Back then, there was not a lot of protocol to follow, not even good advice from SprintRay. So it was trial and error, a classic case of you don't know what you don't know.

Clearly today, we can do a number of things with the models: hollow, holes, supports to name a few, and solid was found to be least ideal from the get go. But those can have their drawbacks as well. I am attaching some images from the past I would take wanting to share the trial and errors, and errors, and errors. 🙂

after burning and learning, solid was out and hollow was in, until it became unpredictable as bases were not always built from the scanner software the same, leading to breakage when taking off the platform, and enormous resin waste trapped inside.
Essentially, the best of all the iterations was to print w/o a palate and a tongue space as they were unpredictable
That along with the improved printing interface of SprintRay, and yes, for this post just writing about SprintRay, not Asiga for example, they created better supports for the build platform we used to our advantage, allowing us to mount and push the plaster into the supports for our best retention
To keep the plaster out of the palate and the tongue space, I use paper dry angles (I would never use in the mouth, ha ha, as I believe Neo Dry are far better) and use gorilla glue to attach; may seem like a lot of work but takes about 30 seconds

Of course, there are more advanced ways to mount. One way is to acquire Axioprisa. I am attaching the link for this as it is an amazing opportunity if you print models. I saw this last year from our friends Bill and Laurie from Great Lakes, talked to them about it a bit and ended up testing this for them on my three scanners: the Carestream 3600, the 3800, and the iTero Lumina. IN ORDER TO USE AXIOPRISA, YOU HAVE TO HAVE A SCANNER THAT IS COMPATIBLE TO HAVE THE ABILITY FOR THE SCANNER TO READ THINGS OTHER THAN TEETH AND TISSUE.

Printing is an amazing tool to have in your toolbox, have three printers now, one wash, and two curing devices. Tons of things you can do but the day to day basics are mounting models, right?

I wrote this as I am curious as to how all of you are attaching resin to plaster, that is all. But added a few things that hopefully are helpful in your journeys.
